Serving Our Neighbors With Dignity and Care Loaves and Fishes continues its commitment to feeding our food‑insecure neighbors across San Diego. Each week, our dedicated volunteers show up to sort and organize donations, weigh and record recovered food, assemble bags of non‑perishable items, and pack and distribute groceries every Monday. Their consistency and compassion remain the backbone of our mission. Rising Need Across San Diego New federal rules are reshaping the food stamp program (CalFresh). According to reporting from the San Diego Union‑Tribune (6/1/26), rising costs and policy changes may cause up to 93,500 San Diego County residents to lose benefits. At the same time, working‑class families continue to face increasing prices for groceries, gasoline, and housing. These pressures make our work more urgent than ever. The demand for reliable, nutritious food support continues to grow, and Loaves and Fishes is committed to meeting that need with compassion and efficiency. How We’re Responding: Corporate Food Rescue Partnerships One of the most effective ways we are addressing this rising need is through our expanding network of corporate food rescue partners. Much of the fresh food we distribute is “rescued” through Feeding San Diego’s recovery initiative, which enables grocery stores to set aside edible surplus food for us to collect, weigh, and record. Food is collected from partners on Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays. Most of this work is done by volunteers who load the food into their vehicles and deliver the food to our food bank at OB Joyful.
